Campbells Opticians first began in the 1960s as a house practice in Post Office Lane by Ian T.Campbell. He had taken it over from Mr.Clegg (also an optician) and was the brother of Cleggs the Pharmacist; he had originally founded the business in 1936 and it too was a house practice located in his living room!
Mr Campbell took the business over when Mr.Clegg died and grew it into a successful, well established and loyal establishment. Along the way he trained several other optometrists in their pre-registration years. In 1996, Ian Campbell, looking for a quieter life decided it was time to slowly retire. It was then, Alasdair Doxey, a Dispensing Optician, took over and has held the helm ever since.
After many years in Newbury Street, the practice was relocated and refitted to its current location. Alasdair brought the practice into the 21st century by making it a more modern and highly visible practice set just off the Market Square, where Geoffrey Bailey shoes were.
At Campbells today, you will be met by a warm friendly welcome and a service that we believe will exceed your expectations. Being an Independent Practice we like to treat everyone we see as a person and not as a number; we feel that our patients derserve an experienced, professional, friendly and caring service where they are neither hurried nor exposed to a hard-sell approach.
Chris Wensley, the practices contact lens Optician, joined several years later and ''Campbells Contact Lens Centre'' was set up under the same roof for the supply and fitting of contact lenses. Chris is a highly experienced contact lens Optician and she is also an examiner for the profession. She carries out clinics for the ''North Hampshire Hospital'' and private consultations at the ''Dunedin Consulting Rooms'' in Reading.
The loyalty cannot just be seen from the patients that visit the practice but also from our staff. We are pleased to have been able to serve generations of clients and most of our business comes from recommendations from happy patients.
